SpaceX Buys Wireless Spectrum: What It Bought, What It Cost

Satellite Internet, October 9, 2026October 9, 2026
United States Β· Breaking Deal Explained Β· Updated Within Days of the News

SpaceX has now agreed to two of the largest spectrum purchases in recent U.S. wireless history, the second one announced this week. The headlines talk about billions and megahertz. This page translates them into what is already approved, what still needs the FCC, and whether anything changes for you today.

What it means right now Nothing changes on your bill today. SpaceX owns or has agreed to buy a large block of wireless airwaves so it can run Starlink Mobile on its own spectrum, but there is no consumer Starlink carrier plan yet, and SpaceX’s own timelines point to late 2027 at the earliest. The newest deal, for 800 MHz low-band spectrum, still needs FCC approval.

Key Answers About the SpaceX Spectrum Deals

Seven questions people are asking, answered without the jargon.

1What did SpaceX actually buy?

Two things. From EchoStar, it bought about 65 MHz of nationwide spectrum in the AWS-3, AWS-4 and H-block bands, which the FCC approved on May 12. This week it agreed to buy a nationwide portfolio of up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum from the investment firm Grain Management, which still needs FCC approval.

2How much is this costing SpaceX?

The EchoStar purchase totals about $19.6 billion, roughly $17 billion for the first two bands plus about $2.6 billion in SpaceX stock for the AWS-3 band. The Grain price was not announced; the Wall Street Journal reported about $8 billion in cash. When we lined up the filings, we found that the $17 billion and $19.6 billion figures describe the same EchoStar deal at different stages.

3Why does 800 MHz matter so much?

Low-band signals travel farther and pass through walls better than the mid-band spectrum SpaceX has used so far. That addresses the biggest weakness of satellite-to-phone service, which is getting a usable signal indoors. Reuters also notes that most existing phones already support the 800 MHz band, so people would not need special satellite phones.

4Can I use Starlink Mobile on my phone yet?

Only the existing limited service, through T-Mobile’s T-Satellite, for texting and a few apps. The spectrum is meant for a much more capable next-generation service. SpaceX’s targets put next-generation satellites at mid-2027 and commercial service from late 2027 to the first half of 2028.

5Will my carrier or my bill change?

Not today. T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon plans are unchanged by these deals. EchoStar says its Boost Mobile, DISH, Sling and Hughes operations are not affected, and Boost customers are expected to get access to the next-generation satellite service under a commercial agreement.

6Is the new 800 MHz deal final?

No. Grain and SpaceX announced a definitive agreement, but it is subject to FCC approval. FCC Chair Brendan Carr welcomed the deal as a boost to investment and competition, though that is a statement, not an approval.

7Should I switch carriers or buy stock because of this?

We would not do either on this news alone. There is no Starlink carrier plan with a price or coverage map to compare, and telecom stocks moved sharply after the announcement. This page is not investment advice, and a plan that is two years out is not a reason to leave a carrier that works for you.

The Deals Side by Side

The spectrum story is a chain of transactions, and each link has a different status. Here is the chain in order.

⚠️ Why the “$8 billion” figure comes with an asterisk

SpaceX and Grain did not announce a price. The roughly $8 billion figure comes from the Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter, and Reuters repeated it with attribution. Treat it as a reported estimate until the FCC filing or a company disclosure confirms it. The same airwaves changed hands for a much lower price when T-Mobile sold them in August, which is why this deal drew so much attention.

Find Carrier Stores Near You

Because these deals do not change plans today, the practical question for most people is how their current carrier performs where they live. This finder opens a live map search for carrier stores near you, which is the easiest place to ask about coverage, satellite add-ons and Boost Mobile changes.

What This Means in Your Exact Situation

πŸ“± You are a T-Mobile customer

Your plan does not change because of these deals. T-Satellite continues to use Starlink’s current network, and T-Mobile sold its 800 MHz holdings to Grain before SpaceX agreed to buy them. If you are curious about the satellite add-on, it is included on some plans and $10 a month on others. You do not need to act on the spectrum news.

βœ… No plan change today πŸ’΅ T-Satellite: included or $10/mo ☎ 611 from a T-Mobile phone
πŸ“ž You are a Boost Mobile customer

This is the group with the clearest link. EchoStar says Boost customers are expected to access SpaceX’s next-generation satellite service through a commercial agreement, and the FCC approval kept Boost running through a hybrid arrangement with AT&T. Your service should continue as normal. Ask Boost directly about timing, since next-generation service is not yet available.

🏠 You have bad signal inside your home

This is exactly the problem the 800 MHz purchase is aimed at, but it is a long-term fix. Low-band signals handle walls better, and SpaceX has also talked about pairing small cells with Starlink dishes at home, an idea that drew skepticism. For now, the practical fixes are Wi-Fi calling, a signal booster approved for your carrier, or moving to a carrier with better coverage where you live.

πŸ“Ά Wi-Fi calling πŸ“‘ Carrier-approved booster πŸ—ΊοΈ Compare coverage at your address
πŸ“ˆ You follow telecom stocks

Telecom shares moved lower after the announcement as investors weighed the prospect of a new facilities-based competitor. That is a reaction, not a forecast, and the plan has a long road: FCC approval, new satellites, and a network that does not yet exist. Read the actual filings on EDGAR and EchoStar’s investor page rather than relying on headlines. This is not investment advice.

🌐 sec.gov/edgar 🌐 ir.echostar.com ⚠️ Not investment advice
πŸ—£οΈ You want to weigh in with the FCC

Spectrum transfers go through a public process, and anyone can read the filings and submit a comment through the FCC’s online system. The Grain transaction still needs approval, so there may be an open window. Keep your comment specific, such as coverage in your area or competition in your market, and include the docket or proceeding number from the FCC filing.

🚨 Someone is selling you a “Starlink phone plan” today

Be skeptical. There is no standalone Starlink carrier plan yet, and SpaceX has not published prices or coverage for one. Anyone asking for a deposit, a prepayment or a “waitlist fee” is not working from an official offer. Check starlink.com directly, and report suspicious offers to the FTC.
